Rising construction costs, have caused the number of multifamily units built using wood framing to more than double in 2016, Realtor Mag reports. Considered safe once construction is completed, wood framing can be vulnerable to fires before interior wallboard and other safety features – like sprinklers and alarms – have been installed. Today’s preference for urban walkable cities is creating high density urban cores further increasing the fire potential. In Maryland, a state senator has introduced legislation that would mandate 24-hour on-site wardens during construction at wood-framed buildings with more than three floors. At a time when our industry is intensely focused on sustainability the savings on wooden construction may not pass the test of time or, the wolf.
