Fairstead is a privately owned, fully integrated real estate investor and manager specializing in multifamily property. Fairstead owns approximately $2.5 billion worth of real estate, comprised of over 11,500 market-rate, work-force and affordable rental units on behalf of its principals and investors with properties in 14 states and offices nationwide.
Fairstead is seeking an entrepreneurial, detail-oriented Controller to oversee the overall accounting and tax management for our growing housing portfolio. This role can expect primary oversight for our affordable housing portfolio nationwide and will report directly to the CFO. Role may be based out of NYC, Bethesda, or Miami Beach.

*Ideal candidate will have a mix of public accounting experience along with direct work in property accounting for an owner operator*


  • Ensure appropriate controls and procedures are in place for accurate and timely financial reporting

  • Oversee month-end close, including reviewing tax-based financial statements

  • Oversee the preparation of detailed audit workpaper in connection with month, quarter and year-end financial audit and reporting process

  • Reconciliation of subsidiary ledgers to general ledger and monthly reports.

  • Utilize existing accounting systems to automate processes and reporting where appropriate

  • Work with property management to research and explain budget to actual variances, and share these explanations with F&A leadership for use in monthly management meetings as required

  • Support CFO with ad-hoc analysis requests

  • Manage annual Building Operating Expenses reports; prepare annual operating budget, revised forecasts

  • Conduct lender compliance reporting and loan compliance activities (e.g., preparing financial packages for lenders, TC201, RPIE, etc.)

  • Experience with partnerships, family partnerships

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and the accounting requirements of real estate organizations

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field

  • Ideal candidate will have a minimum 8-10 years of relevant experience in accounting experience in property management accounting, financial analysis, and/ investment fund management
